I am always aware of the feeding of my children, but above all I am concerned that they take two glasses of milk as recommended by my pediatrician because it is the most convenient for a healthy growth of children. But am I giving them my best? Perhaps not, especially after learning that the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has denounced that the milk quality today it is worse than the milk analyzed ten years ago and that the most expensive brands are not necessarily the best.

Milk is an essential food for the growth of children because it provides calcium, an essential mineral to develop strong bones, good quality proteins, which intervene in the construction of muscles, bones and tissues of the body and vitamin D, which helps the body to absorb calcium.

We tell you why the Milk quality is worse today than 10 years ago.

For this reason, between the first and third year of life it is recommended to take half a liter of milk a day to cover the calcium needs that children need, which are 800 mg. As children grow, the recommended daily servings of dairy are two and are equivalent to two glasses of milk, a glass of milk and two yogurts or a glass of milk, a yogurt and a little cheese.

This organization has analyzed 47 brands of whole milk and has concluded that quality differences between one and the other they are "abysmal" and that the composition of some of these products can be classified as "fraud".

Basically, the composition of milk varies greatly depending on factors such as the seasons of the year or the breed of cows. What's more, andn the last 20 years, milk production has almost doubled, but at the cost of a lower concentration of nutrients. Specifically, the results of the OCU analysis have shown that there are brands that do not provide the minimum fat content; what the milks are now poorer in calcium, Furthermore, the calcium / phosphorus ratio is often unbalanced, either because there is little calcium, or because there is plenty of phosphorus (probably due to the addition of stabilizers); that many of the milks analyzed undergo very aggressive heat treatments, something that is not necessary if the milk is in good hygienic conditions, since although excessive heating kills microorganisms, it also degrades vitamins and proteins; and finally, what some brands seem to use milks too old: the laboratory detects, for example, signs of protein degradation.

The OCU has denounced that there is an "alarming lack of control" of the procedures used by some manufacturers, and attributed the decline in the quality of whole milk to the fact that legal requirements "have relaxed" since the regulatory change in 2006 and the intensive production system. In addition, he criticizes that controls to which the milk is subjected they are not demanding enough. The analysis carried out by this organization ten years ago found that the milks of poor quality were "much less numerous" than today.
